The Chicago White Sox have placed young star second baseman Yoan Moncada on the 10-day disabled list.

Yoan Moncada has been up with the Chicago White Sox for over a month now. Moncada is considered to be the top prospect in the game by most, but his big league debut with the White Sox has not been great.

Through 122 major league plate appearances this season, Moncada is hitting an uninspiring .188/.328/.306 with a 88 wRC+, according to FanGraphs. Now, Moncada has suffered an injury that has forced the White Sox to send him to the disabled list.

DL announcement

Prior to Friday’s game against the Detroit Tigers, the White Sox announced that Moncada would head to the 10-day disabled list with a bone contusion in his shin. Matt Davidson returned from the DL to take his place on the roster.

More from Chicago White Sox

Moncada is undoubtedly an extremely talented player with a ton of upside. However, his early MLB struggles are starting to be a bit concerning. Last year, he was called up for short stint with the Boston Red Sox, where he struggled as well. Both times Moncada has been called up to the big leagues, his power drastically suffered and he struck out way too much. It’s not the time to sound the alarms and call Moncada a bust, but it is certainly not an ideal situation.

Center of the rebuild

Moncada was the centerpiece of the Chris Sale trade this offseason. Without Moncada, there is no way that the Red Sox could have acquired sale. As soon as the Chicago White Sox pulled the trigger on that deal, the deep rebuild was on and Moncada became the face. He played extremely well at Triple-A and earned a call up to the big leagues just over a month ago, but his performance has been lacking.

There is no reason to freak out. Moncada is still an extremely talented player who has a ton of overall upside in his game. However, 142 plate appearances into his big league career, Moncada is hitting a pretty ugly .192/.317/.342. It’s still a small sample size, but I think everybody would feel more comfortable if he can turn it around soon.

Hopefully, Moncada can come back off of the disabled list in a couple of weeks and finish his season strong. He is still the single most important player on the roster and the true centerpiece of the Chicago White Sox rebuild.
