Quarterbacks

Starter: Mike Glennon

Backups: Mitch Trubisky and Mark Sanchez

In some ways, a lot has changed since we last make quarterback predictions. Perceived starter Mike Glennon was absolutely awful in the preseason opener against the Denver Broncos. Glennon looked completely overmatched on the field and certainly did not inspire confidence in the Bears and their fans.

On the other hand, rookie Mitch Trubisky came out and looked like a five-time All-Pro quarterback. Trubisky showed great decision-making skills, a strong arm, pinpoint accuracy and fantastic mobility. He threw on the run extremely well and was the only Bears quarterback to lead the team to points.

The two players were much closer in the second preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals. Glennon was not impressive by any means, but he wasn’t near as awful as he was the week before. The Bears protected Glennon with short passes and he did not mess too much up. However, he still struggled to read through his progressions. Glennon appears to be a guy who locks on to one receiver at a time. That will get you in big trouble in the NFL.

Trubisky came back to earth in the second preseason game. His obvious talent and upside are certainly still there, but he was not as crisp as he was against the Broncos. Starting Trubisky in Week 1 would be exciting, but he legitimately may not be ready.

I fully expect Glennon to be the Bears’ starting quarterback in Week 1 against the Atlanta Falcons. I also fully expect him not to perform well. I do not think that Glennon is a starting caliber NFL quarterback and we will learn that quickly.

Trubisky will take over this job sooner, rather than later, but it will not be in Week 1. Glennon will be the starter with Trubisky as his primary backup. Mark Sanchez will make the roster as the Bears’ third quarterback and will be a nice veteran influence on Trubisky.
