Previewing the Chicago Bulls 2017-2018 roster, player by player. Today we’ll be previewing Kris Dunn.

In preparation for the upcoming Chicago Bulls season, those of us at Da Windy City will be previewing expectations for each individual Bulls player. Today, I’ll be discussing newly acquired sophomore guard Kris Dunn.

Last Season

After being drafted fifth overall in the 2016 NBA Draft, Kris Dunn was traded to Chicago from Minnesota via the Jimmy Butler trade this offseason. Despite his high draft position, Dunn did not perform his rookie year as expected.

In his rookie season, Dunn did not get much playing time due to Ricky Rubio starting at the point for Minnesota. According to statistics gathered by ESPN, Dunn played only 17.1 minutes per game. In that time, Dunn averaged almost four points per game and a little more than two assists and rebounds.

To put it simply, this is not the kind of production expected from a top-five overall pick. To make matters worse, Dunn shot .288 from three with a .377 field goal percentage and a .610 free-throw percentage. However, despite the abysmal rookie campaign, the Bulls’ acquisition of Dunn isn’t bad.

What to expect next season

Although he didn’t have a strong rookie season, Dunn is a great addition. I believe Dunn will not only improve this year but also develop into an important asset for the Bulls down the line.

Depending on the health of Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn could be starting for the Chicago Bulls at the point this season. Due to the low expectations for Chicago this season, the young assets from the Butler trade should get plenty of minutes. At the very least, Dunn’s playing time from last season should increase significantly.

Ideally, for the Bulls, a lineup with Dunn at the one and LaVine at the two is the plan. Management and Bulls fans alike want to see what Dunn has to offer, as he is one of the biggest assets of the Butler trade.

I believe that Dunn will average at least ten points this season. He will be successful in getting his teammates involved as well. Look for Dunn to average five assists or more per game as well.

Assuming he improves and doesn’t play horribly, Dunn shouldn’t be in any concern at all to be moved this season. It’s very evident that Chicago is in complete rebuild mode. Being 23, Dunn is going to be a key component to the rebuild. He’s young with a large amount of upside and potential.

Pending possible injuries, I don’t see any way Dunn doesn’t improve from his rookie campaign. Watch out for Dunn to show Chicago why he’ll be a part of the Bulls’ future.
