The Chicago Bears should challenge Mitch Trubisky by starting him in the second preseason game.

Let’s get this out of the way right off of the bat, I am not saying that the Chicago Bears should now make Mitch Trubisky their full-time starter. He was incredible on Thursday night and Mike Glennon was downright awful. However, Glennon played against a fierce Denver Broncos starting defense, while Trubisky primarily played against third-string players.

I was already a huge believer in Trubisky, but after his performance in the preseason opener, I have no doubts about his abilities. The Chicago Bears are in good hands at the quarterback position going forward.

On Thursday night, Trubisky showed it all. His arm strength is clearly legit, his accuracy is incredibly impressive and he also shows fantastic mobility for an NFL quarterback. Trubisky escapes pressure like a 10-year vet and has an incredible knack for throwing on the run. His debut as a Bears quarterback could not have gone better.

That being said, starting him in 2017 still may not be the best plan of attack. Trubisky only started 13 games throughout his college career. His only season as the starter was impressive, but he is not joining the NFL with a ton of game experience. Also, what college experience Trubisky has came from a wide-open shotgun attack. He still needs to learn how to run a pro-style offense.

More from Chicago Bears

While I do not think this one game should make Trubisky the Bears’ starting quarterback, John Fox and company should look to put him in a position to win the job. We are being told not to freak out about one preseason appearance against weak competition. Why not give Trubisky a chance to prove himself against a starting caliber defense?

I think the Chicago Bears should look to do this right away by starting Mitch Trubisky in their Week 2 preseason matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Fox and the Bears can still call Glennon the starting quarterback, just tell the media that they want to see what Trubisky can do against a starting defense. If he doesn’t look great, it will be easy for them to point to as a reason to start Glennon.

If he doesn’t look great, it will be easy for them to point to it as a reason to start Glennon. However, if Trubisky comes out and plays at a high level against a tough Cardinals’ defense, considering him as the regular season starter becomes a real possibility.

Let’s be honest, Trubisky and Glennon looked like two completely different quarterbacks on Thursday night. The rookie was absolutely incredible and showed that he has massive upside in the NFL. Point blank, Glennon was terrible. The Bears can still call Glennon the starter, but to not even think about the possibility of starting Trubisky would be foolish.

Give the kid an opportunity to prove himself against high-level talent. Starting him against the Cardinals in the second week of the preseason is the best route to go.
