The Chicago White Sox will call up talented pitching prospect Reynaldo Lopez to start on Friday.

According to Chicago White Sox general manager Rick Hahn, pitching prospect Reynaldo Lopez will be called up to make his Chicago debut on Friday against the Kansas City Royals. Hahn dropped the news to reporters prior to Tuesday night’s game.

"“He has answered all the questions we’ve had for him at the Triple-A level (so) it’s now time to challenge him a little further with big-league hitters on an every fifth-day basis,” Hahn said, according to Chris Kuc of the Chicago Tribune.“In the end, that last stage of development has to happen at the big-league level where the speed of the game is a little quicker and the hitters are a little bit more advanced. I look forward to seeing how he responds to that challenge.”"

Lopez will replace Mike Pelfrey in the White Sox’s rotation. Pelfrey will now pitch out of the bullpen.

In 22 starts at Triple-A Charlotte this season, Lopez posted a 3.79 ERA. According to FanGraphs, he also had a 25.4% strikeout rate and a 9.5% walk rate. Lopez had a lot of success at Triple-A and has seemed ready for this call up for a while now.

While this will be Lopez’s first action with the Chicago White Sox, he will not be making his MLB debut. Last season, Lopez pitched in 11 games (six starts) for the Washington Nationals, finishing the year with a 4.91 ERA.

The White Sox acquired Lopez as part of the Adam Eaton trade with the Nationals over the offseason. Lopez does not have elite top of the rotation upside, but he is a talented pitcher who seems to hit his spots with consistency. If nothing else, it will be fun to see another top prospect reach the majors.

The White Sox have a ton of prospect talent, particularly on the mound. However, Lopez is among their best prospects. Lopez may end up not being ready to make an impact in the big leagues, but the White Sox are in a great position to give him every opportunity to succeed.
