Chicago Bulls: Grading each move made this offseason
Bulls sign Antonio Blakeney to a two-way contract
Chicago Bulls Grade: A
The Bulls gave undrafted rookie Antonio Blakeney a shot to prove himself on their Summer League team. There were not many bright spots for the Bulls in Summer League this season, but Blakeney showed up in a big way.
During the Bulls’ Summer League games in Las Vegas, Blakeney averaged 16.8 points per game. He also shot a ridiculous 64.3% from three-point range. After his impressive play in Summer League action, the Bulls signed Blakeney to a two-way contract that goes for two seasons. This means that the Bulls can develop Blakeney in the G League, but also promote him to the NBA roster when needed.
What’s not to love about this deal? Blakeney is not a perfect player, but he is an exciting offensive weapon who has a ton of long-term upside. He is an incredibly athletic player who can create his own shot off of the dribble and slam down thunderous dunks in the lane. As we saw in the Summer League, Blakeney can also light it up from three-point range.
He is not much of a defensive asset or a distributor with the ball in his hands. Also, at 6-foot-4, Blakeney does not have ideal size for the two-guard position. However, he can undoubtedly put the ball in the hoop.
I could see Blakeney growing into a valuable bench scoring role for the Chicago Bulls down the line. Think Jamal Crawford with a raw skill set and more athleticism. Considering there is literally no downside and quite a bit of upside, I love this move for the Bulls.
