Well, that was quick. Former Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler is already back, coming out of retirement to sign a one-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. Who will be better in 2017, Cutler or new Bears starter Mike Glennon?

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and many in the industry, the Miami Dolphins have signed quarterback Jay Cutler to a one-year contract worth at least $10 million. Cutler comes out of retirement to replace the recently injured Ryan Tannehill at the quarterback position for the Dolphins.

Cutler has been the starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears for the past eight season. He is the franchise’s all-time leader in passing yards (23,443) and passing touchdowns (154). However, Cutler’s time in Chicago never went according to plan.

The Bears traded for Jay Cutler from the Denver Broncos way back in 2009. The Bears gave up a haul for Cutler, and he was expected to come in and lead the team to the promise land. Cutler had some nice statistical seasons in Chicago, but he was never able to lead the Bears to many victories. It was an up-and-down eight-year marriage and both sides were best off going their separate ways this past offseason.

An interesting offseason for Jay Cutler

However, Cutler did not get much interest on the open market and decided to retire from the game. He accepted a job to broadcast the NFL for FOX before the Tannehill injury brought him back.

Cutler now joins the Dolphins primarily because of his history with current Miami head coach and former Bears offensive coordinator Adam Gase. Now, that Jay Cutler is back in the league, it is impossible to not make the comparison between him and his replacement in Chicago, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers backup quarterback Mike Glennon.

What to expect from Glennon

More from Chicago Bears

While Mitch Trubisky is going to take the job eventually, Glennon is the Bears’ starting quarterback in 2017. Similar to Cutler, Glennon has a big arm, but his accuracy is pretty ugly. He also has very little mobility and is afraid to push the ball down the field with consistency. Honestly, I do not expect much out of Glennon in 2017.

However, it is not like Cutler is the perfect quarterback. There is certainly a scenario where Cutler arrives in Miami and continues to be a turnover machine. So, which quarterback will perform better in 2017?

Situation gives edge to Cutler

Personally, I am going to go with Jay Cutler. He is just in a much better situation. In Gase’s only season with the Bears (2015), Cutler had arguably his best career season, completing 64.4% of his passes for 3,659 yards, 21 touchdowns and only 11 interceptions. In Miami, Cutler has one of the best offensive coaches in the league as his head coach, Glennon has John Fox.

On top of that, the Dolphins have many more interesting weapons to work with. Kenny Stills and DeVante Parker are both interesting deep threats on the outside, while Jarvis Landry is arguably the most dangerous weapon out of the slot in the entire game.

The Bears wide receivers simply cannot compare to that. The Bears have the edge with their running game led by Jordan Howard, but the Dolphins run the ball well with Jay Ajayi as well.

All NFL quarterbacks need to be protected to have success. The Bears have a strong interior offensive line, but their offensive tackle situation is ugly, to say the least. In Miami, Jay Cutler will have one of the best, young offensive lines in the NFL protecting him.

Bears still made the right move

Based on the situations, I fully expect Cutler to have a much better season than Glennon in 2017. However, that does not mean that the Bears should have kept him around. I did not agree with the Glennon signing, but moving on from Cutler was a move that needed to be made. This franchise was clearly not going anywhere with him under center.

Now, they can move forward with Mike Glennon as the stopgap starter and Mitch Trubisky as their exciting franchise quarterback of the future.

Jay Cutler may have a big year with the Miami Dolphins. However, that will have much more to do with him being in a good situation than being a high-level NFL quarterback. If he would have stayed in Chicago, nothing would have changed. The Bears are better off with Glennon and eventually Trubisky under center.
