Chicago Sports Mount Rushmore: All-time greatest Chicago athletes
Frank Thomas, Chicago White Sox (1990-2005)
For me, this final Mount Rushmore spot was tough. Jordan, Payton and Banks were obvious. However, there are many players who could be considered here. Everybody who received votes would have been a worthy choice. I would also add Dick Butkus to the mix because I am surprised that he did not receive a single vote. However, I think we at Da Windy City got this right by placing Chicago White Sox legend Frank Thomas on the Chicago Sports Mount Rushmore.
Thomas was not a complete baseball player. His defense at first base was not pretty, forcing him to DH for a majority of his career. He was also not exactly blessed with elite speed. However, his offensive impact was incredible. In his 16 seasons with the White Sox, Thomas hit an impressive .307/.447/.568 with 448 home runs.
His overall game was not elite, but Thomas had it all at the plate. He was obviously a big-time power threat and let’s be honest, chicks dig the long ball. He was not known as a contact hitter, but his career batting average of .307 speaks for itself. Thomas also had incredible plate discipline, showing an elite eye at the plate. This guy was an absolute offensive force.

The impact that Thomas made on the Chicago White Sox and the entire Windy City still lives on today. He is undoubtedly a Chicago sports legend who deserves to be on this Mount Rushmore.
