The Chicago Cubs took down the Milwaukee Brewers by a score of 2-1 on Saturday night. Jason Heyward’s 11th inning home run was the difference. Watch Heyward’s bomb here.

Things did not look great for the Chicago Cubs through most of Saturday night. They threatened to score multiple times against Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Junior Guerra but were never able to get a run across the board. Kyle Hendricks pitched well, but he gave up a first inning run that held for a long time.

Kris Bryant was finally able to get the Cubs on the board with a RBI single in the seventh inning and it was a whole new ball game. The 1-1 tie held until the 11th inning when Jason Heyward stepped to the plate.

Heyward’s line drive home run to right field gave his team a 2-1 lead and an opportunity to give the ball to Wade Davis to finish it off. Davis allowed a walk in 11th but was able to close the door to give the Cubs a big 2-1 win. Heyward’s home run was the big play, but this was a great team effort, especially from the pitching staff.

Hendricks pitched five innings and only allowed the one run. He gave up six hits but did not walk a single batter. Hendricks’ velocity is still down and that is a concern. However, it is hard to argue with the results.

The Cubs’ bullpen took over for Hendricks in the sixth and they did a fantastic job. Brian Duensing, Carl Edwards Jr., Pedro Strop, Koji Uehara, Mike Montgomery and Wade Davis combined for six shutout innings in relief of Hendricks. It was an extremely impressive night from the Cubs’ bullpen.
