Chicago Bears: Predicting the 2017 53-man roster before training camp
Quarterbacks
Starter: Mike Glennon
Backups: Mitch Trubisky and Mark Sanchez
The Chicago Bears did a complete overhaul at the quarterback position this offseason. Jay Cutler is finally gone, and Brian Hoyer and Matt Barkley followed him right out the door. The Bears made a quick commitment to Mike Glennon in free agency, signing him to a three-year contract worth $45 million. With that kind of money, Glennon was expected to be the Bears starter the moment he signed, but the 2017 NFL Draft changed things drastically.
As you know, the Bears held the third overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft but traded up one spot to snag quarterback Mitch Trubisky at number two. The trade was hated by most, but Pace and the Bears clearly thought that Trubisky was the guy to lead this franchise into the future.
Glennon enters training camp as the starting quarterback for the Chicago Bears. Trubisky is undoubtedly the future at the position, but Glennon will likely have a year to prove himself. That being said, if shows up to camp and immediately starts to play at a high level, this could quickly become an interesting decision for the rebuilding Bears.
Glennon has a big arm and some NFL experience, but he is an extremely inaccurate passer who has no mobility and seems afraid to take shots down the field. Trubisky, on the other hand, is incredibly accurate and mobile in and outside of the pocket. He is an impressive quarterback prospect who could quickly shine in the NFL.
I fully expect Glennon to be the Bears’ starter at the beginning of 2017. However, crazier things have happened than a star rookie like Trubisky immediately proving he is starter worthy. I predict that Glennon will be the Bears’ starter in Week 1, with Trubisky being his backup. Mark Sanchez was brought in to be the veteran third-string quarterback and could be a valuable asset as some sort of personal coach to Trubisky.
