3. Mitch Trubisky

The Chicago Bears may have no desire to allow Mitch Trubisky to truly compete for a starting job in training camp, but all eyes will be on him anyway. As the second-overall pick in this year’s draft, he carries the weight of the franchise’s future on his shoulders.

And when he hits the field at Bourbonnais, I think he’ll have no problem showing everyone why the Bears put their trust in him.

Why he’ll succeed

Trubisky already has the basic traits he needs to succeed at the NFL level. He has solid arm strength, impressive accuracy, athleticism and a laser-focused football mentality that could allow him to progress more quickly in an NFL offense than your typical spread-option quarterback. And while his deep ball needs to be more accurate, don’t take that to mean he can’t stretch the field.

Furthermore, as mentioned before, he has an uncanny knack for taking difficult situations and making them work for him. Whether he was coming off the bench in relief of Marquise Williams at UNC or battling back to give his team a chance to beat Stanford, adversity doesn’t seem to limit him. And that’s a quality he’ll need as he embarks on this (hopefully) franchise-altering journey.

Though rookie mistakes and growing pains must be expected to an extent, expect Trubisky to make some big-time throws both in practice and in pre-season games. Plus, watch out for his athleticism outside of the pocket, as that element of his game will stand in stark contrast to Mike Glennon.

Glennon will likely open the season as the starter, but Trubisky should give Bears fans—and fans around the league—positive things to talk about until it’s his time to shine. As the second-overall pick, it’s hard to say Trubisky could sneak up on anyway. But given the uncertainty many fans felt about his selection, a solid training camp could be a pleasant surprise nonetheless.
