Jose Quintana will make his second start for the Cubs on Sunday night. He made his Cubs debut exactly a week ago, absolutely dominating the Baltimore Orioles. Quintana pitched seven shutout innings last Sunday, allowing only three hits in the game. He recorded an impressive 12 strikeouts and did not walk a single batter.
The Cubs traded a haul for Quintana and he proved worth the acquisition price in his first start. Jon Lester similarly dominant against the Cardinals on Saturday. Quintana and Lester are both similar pitchers who rely on command, consistency and keeping the ball down. The Cardinals will send right-hander Michael Wacha to the mound to face Quintana in this one. Wacha has been a bit inconsistent this season, but his overall numbers are strong. He has a 3.71 ERA, 3.34 FIP and 23.7% strikeout rate in 17 starts for the Cardinals this season, according to FanGraphs. He has been even better recently, allowing only three runs through 26.2 innings in his last four starts.
The Cubs’ offense can score against anybody, but they will have their work cut out against Wacha on Sunday.
