With Chicago Bears training camp less than a week away, all eyes are on rookie quarterback Mitch Trubisky. One of the most controversial picks of the 2017 NFL Draft, Trubisky has a lot to prove.

When Jay Cutler was released in March, fans of the Chicago Bears thought that controversy surrounding the quarterback position was over. Little did we all know that it was just getting started. About a month and a half later, the Bears traded up one spot to select quarterback Mitch Trubisky with the second overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Before Trubisky was drafted, the Bears signed Buccaneers backup quarterback Mike Glennon to a three-year deal worth $45 million. Glennon is the starter entering training camp. But as the obvious quarterback of the future, Trubisky has a chance to win the job away from Glennon. As seen with Carson Wentz and the Eagles last year, big contracts by no means guarantee starting jobs in the NFL.

Trubisky has his job cut out for him. The Bears are not going to look for big plays. As a rookie, Trubisky needs to do exactly what the Bears ask, nothing less. With Glennon the clear front-runner, Trubisky cannot try to do too much.

Big expectations

Although he isn’t the starter, the Bears still have huge expectations for Trubisky. Winning the starting job from Mike Glennon would be huge for both Trubisky and the Bears. Whether the Chicago Bears expect him to or not, Trubisky needs to do all he can to start on week one.

More from Chicago Bears

If Trubisky struggles throughout training camp the next month, and Glennon remains the starter, the Bears and their fans have no reason to panic. Winning the starting job from somebody signed to the kind of contract Glennon was signed to is no small task, and Bears fans need to be patient.

What to expect

As the most important player on the roster, how Trubisky performs will be the biggest storyline at Bears training camp. Fans can expect occasional struggles and rookie mistakes, but also consistency, promise and most of all, potential. Trubisky was the second-overall pick for a reason. He has the skills to have a successful NFL career.

This is Trubisky’s job to win. Trubisky has experienced his fair share of criticism and doubt, but as the second overall pick, he is the future at quarterback for the Chicago Bears. With Bears training camp less than a week away, all eyes are on rookie quarterback Mitch Trubisky.
