Five remaining trade targets for the Chicago Cubs
Who will the Chicago Cubs target on the trade market after swinging a deal for starting pitcher Jose Quintana?
The Chicago Cubs jumped the trade market last week when they swung a deal with the Chicago White Sox for starting pitcher Jose Quintana. Quintana not only dramatically helps the Cubs chances to compete in 2017, he will be an important part of the rotation for many years.
The Cubs are still getting connected to big names like Sonny Gray and Zach Britton. However, trading for Quintana is likely the biggest move we will see out of the Cubs prior to the MLB trade deadline. The Cubs sent their top two prospects, outfielder Eloy Jimenez and pitcher Dylan Cease, to the White Sox for Quintana.
While they still have the prospect talent to make other deals, if the Cubs are going to make another major addition, they will have to trade from their major league roster. At this point, I simply do not see somebody like Kyle Schwarber, Ian Happ or Javier Baez moved unless it is in a completely unexpected massive move. The Cubs will now likely look to add to their roster on the edges.
Quintana was their big moves, but there are still other moves that can be made. In particular, pitching additions (both in the rotation and in the bullpen) and a veteran backup catcher stand out as immediate needs. With prospects like Jeimer Candelario, Mark Zagunis, Trevor Clifton and Jose Albertos still around, the Chicago Cubs still have plenty of minor league talent to improve their team around the edges.
Do not expect any huge names, but let’s take a look at some interesting possible upcoming trade targets for the Chicago Cubs.
