For pennies on the dollar, the Dallas Mavericks traded for Nerlens Noel from the Philadelphia 76ers prior to the trade deadline last season. Noel had become a big-time asset for the 76ers on the defensive end, but they simply did not have room for him in the rotation. Trading him before he hit restricted free agency made the most sense.

Now, the Mavericks are expected to match nearly any offer sent Noel’s way. However, we are now deep into free agency and nothing has been accomplished on this front. Noel is almost inarguably the most valuable player still on the market and he would fit the Bulls rebuild extremely well. I would love to see them at least make some sort of offer for Noel.

If Dallas matches, fine, there is nothing you can do about that. But Noel is an extremely young and talented player who they should be trying to acquire.

Noel’s length and athleticism as a big man has really made him an impact defensive player in recent years. He is never going to be a big threat on the offensive end, but Noel more than makes up for it with his defensive presence. He is an elite rim protector who also rebounds the ball extremely well. He is an aggressive player who is not afraid to attack the glass at either end of the court.

Also, similarly to Green, Noel has the defensive versatility that teams crave in a big man. He can jump out and defend the perimeter when necessary. Also, while his offensive game is limited, Noel runs the court well and can finish around the rim. He is never going to be a massive threat in the half court offense, but his ability in transition is exciting.

Simply put, the Chicago Bulls need to find a way to add as many young and talented long-term assets as possible. A defensive star who is only 23 years old certainly fits that criteria.
