First, let’s start off with an upside flyer. I promise we will get to some more established players soon, but James Young should be an intriguing player for a rebuilding squad like the Chicago Bulls.James Young should be an intriguing player for a rebuilding squad like the Chicago Bulls.

Young entered the NBA as a sweet-shooting one-and-done player at Kentucky. He was drafted by the Boston Celtics with the 17th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft. Young showed the ability to shoot from the outside in college, but never took the necessary steps to be a significant part of the Celtics rotation.

He has played in 89 games for the Celtics over the past three seasons, averaging only 8.4 minutes per game. Young is averaging 2.3 points and 1.1 rebounds per game for his career. He entered the NBA as a guy who was supposed to be able to shoot from the outside but has a career three-point percentage of 27.6%. On the plus side, Young did shoot a reasonable 34.3% from three-point range last season.

In his first two seasons with the Celtics, Young spent a lot of time down in the D-League. He was not a dominant player down there but he did show a bit of upside. In 31 career D-League games, Young averaged 18.7 points per game. He also shot 40.6% from long-range.

I am not saying that the Chicago Bulls should aggressively pursue Young and immediately make him an important part of the rotation. However, he is a former first round pick who is only 21 years old. The Bulls could undoubtedly use some more outside shooting and could probably get Young on a league minimum deal. There is zero risk involved and the upside is there. The Bulls may as well see what Young can bring to the table.
