Updates on a couple of injured Chicago Cubs stars.

The Chicago Cubs suffered an 8-4 loss to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday night, but the bigger story was the injury to star third baseman Kris Bryant. Bryant caught a pop-up, but tweaked his ankle on third base when he came down with the ball. Honestly, it did not look good when it happened.

Bryant immediately left the game and had to be helped off of the field. According to Carrie Muskat of MLB.com, the Cubs had x-rays taken on Bryant’s ankle and they came back negative. That is the good news. However, a stint on the disabled list seems possible.

"“Manager Joe Maddon said they have no timetable regarding Bryant’s status but knew for certain that he would not play on Thursday,” Muskat wrote.“It’s unfortunate,” Maddon said. “Hopefully, it’ll just be a couple days. … Let’s keep moving it forward and hope it’s not too bad.”"

Not exactly a ton of confidence coming from the Cubs manager. The Cubs obviously want to get the reigning National League MVP in the lineup as much as possible, but I wonder if they are just better off playing it safe and sending him to the 10-day DL. The All-Star break is just over 10 days away. The Cubs could use this time to give Bryant a break and make sure the ankle heals properly.

When it comes to a talent like Bryant, you can never be too safe.

Ben Zobrist

On the positive side, Muskat also notes that Ben Zobrist will start his rehab. Zobrist will join Double-A Tennessee on Tuesday.

Zobrist has been out since early June with a nagging wrist injury. However, he has seemingly back on track to return soon. The Cubs may play it safe with Zobrist as well, but he has already had time to rest his injury. As long as the rehab stint goes well, expect Zobrist to be back in the big leagues in a few days.

If Bryant has to make a trip to the DL, getting Zobrist back would certainly help them cope with the loss. The Chicago Cubs have struggled with injuries all season long. Luckily, they all appear to be minor. However, they have certainly played their impact in the Cubs’ disappointing 39-39. Despite all of the issues, the Cubs still only trail the Milwaukee Brewers by one game in the National League Central.

Things certainly have not been going well, but the Chicago Cubs are still right in the thick of things.
