Would Colin Kaepernick be best quarterback on Chicago Bears roster?
Are the Chicago Bears current crop of quarterbacks better than free agent Colin Kaepernick?
Let’s get this out-of-the-way to start. In no way, shape or form do I believe there is any sort of possibility that the Chicago Bears will sign former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. That ship probably sailed when the Bears signed Mike Glennon to open up free agency and certainly did after they traded up to draft Mitch Trubisky. That being said, this still makes for an interesting conversation.
This case of Kaepernick is an interesting one, to say the least. He was once one of the most exciting young quarterbacks in the NFL and used his stance to speak out about an important issue that he clearly believes strongly in. Kaepernick has not been a high-level quarterback on the field for a long time but he was good enough last season where he should probably have a job at this point of the offseason.
Call it what you want but it does seem odd that Kaepernick is still without a job. Scott Kacsmar of Football Outsiders seems to agree, listing nine teams that Kaepernick would immediately be the best quarterback on. The Chicago Bears were one of the teams to make the cut.
In 12 games (11 starts) for the 49ers last season, Kaepernick completed 59.2 percent of his passes for 2,241 yards, 16 touchdowns and only four interceptions. On top of that, he used his elite athleticism at the position to pile up 468 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in only 69 carries. Kaepernick was not an elite quarterback by any stretch of the imagination, but putting the off-field controversy (for lack of a better term) aside, he was pretty good.
Now, his accuracy is clearly still a major concern and any sort of backlash for signing him may not be worth it. That being said, would Kaepernick be a better quarterback than the current options for the Chicago Bears in 2017? Personally, I would agree with Kacsmar here.
It will be interesting to see what Glennon can do this season. He is a strong-armed quarterback who had a bit of success early in his career. However, Glennon also has serious accuracy issues and has a tendency to check down far too often. I have a hard time believing that he will lead the Bears to much success in 2017.
Trubisky is obviously a major wildcard. If he can adapt to the NFL game quicker than expected, it would not be difficult to see the Bears’ rookie playing at a higher level than Kaepernick did last season. That being said, he was not considered to be pro-ready coming out of the draft and the Bears appear ready to sit him for his entire rookie season.
Basically, this comes down to Kaepernick versus Glennon. I was on Kaepernick as an interesting free agency option for the Bears early and I stand by my opinion. Taking a shot on Kaepernick as a high-upside option would have been a wise move for the Bears. They still could have drafted Trubisky while trying to catch lightning in a bottle with Kaepernick.
You never know, maybe he would have played well and given the Bears a strong trade chip to work with moving forward. The upside far outweighed the risk in my opinion.
Next: No reason for Bears to chase WR Maclin
Regardless, Mike Glennon is the Bears’ starting quarterback for the 2017 season and Mitch Trubisky is the future.
