Chicago Bears News: Kyle Long to switch positions?
The Chicago Bears are entertaining the idea of having Pro-Bowl right guard Kyle Long switch positions along the offensive line.
Chicago Bears‘ Pro-Bowl right guard Kyle Long has been no stranger to switching positions and another position change may be in the works for Long.
According to Brad Briggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears are exploring the idea of Kyle Long being the team’s starting left guard once the 2017 season begins in September.
"The depth chart is fluid in May, but in the stretch run of the voluntary offseason workout program, sources maintain this switch appears to be in the works. One source said the move was a topic of discussion shortly after the end of last season. Whether they stick to this plan through the spring and into training camp remains to be seen. The Bears have the maximum 10 OTA dates scheduled through June 9 and will wrap up the offseason with mandatory minicamp June 13-15.More from Da Windy CityJuan Soto appears headed to the Yankees which is not a big blow Chicago Cubs offseason3 takeaways from Chicago Blackhawks shootout loss to NashvilleChicago Cubs in the middle of chaos that is Shohei Ohtani’s free agencyThe Chicago Cubs are on a roller coaster of emotions chasing Shohei OhtaniChicago Bears quietly compiling list of head coaching candidates"
Long is still recovering from an ankle injury that he originally suffered against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last November. There has been no definitive timeline given on when Long will be able to practice but the Bears appear to be going forward with the position change. With Long switching to the left side, Josh Sitton will assume starting duties at the right guard position.
Long has proven to be versatile considering he has flipped flop between the right guard and right tackle positions over the course of the past three seasons. Long returned to the right guard position last season but dealt with a rash of injuries.
It will be curious to see how the Bears explain the position change for Long. Long has discretely voiced displeasure with position changes in the past. With a new quarterback in either Mike Glennon or Mitchell Trubisky, a stable offensive line will be pivotal to the Bears’ offensive success in 2017.

Chicago Bears head coach John Fox will likely address Long’s status as well as the status of the offensive line when the team continues their off-season program in June.
