2017 NBA Draft: Top point guard prospects for the Chicago Bulls
Frank Mason III, Kansas (6-foot-0, 189 pounds)
The Chicago Bulls like to draft players who are more seasoned than other prospects. For example, they did well in drafting seniors Taj Gibson and Jimmy Butler.
Should they continue that trend, they can pick up the 2016 Consensus National Player of the Year award winner. He averaged 20.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game for the Jayhawks. Also, he averaged 1.3 steals per game.
Mason gives the Bulls a good shooter. He shot 47.1 percent from beyond the arc. Inside the arc, he shot 50 percent.
Mason impressed at last week’s NBA Combine. In the five-on-five part of the Combine, he excelled. He pushed the ball up the court, played well at different speeds, and showed no fear of attacking the rim. He played excellent defense and his value showed when he left the floor. When he left, his team collapsed. He was a +8 while on the floor, great considering his team lost by 18 points.
Mason lacks the height most teams want in their point guard. Also, being a senior hurts his draft status. He makes up for that with athleticism, toughness, and basketball IQ. These are all attributes that the Bulls historically love in their prospects. He developed a nice floater that helps him attack the rim against the bigs.
Mason had an interesting interview session at the Combine. Apparently, a team asked him if he were to die, how would he like to go.
Of course, teams deliberately ask questions out of left field to see how a prospect handles and answers those questions. By his answer, he did well with that also.
The Bulls did well in drafting players overlooked by other teams. Frank Mason III is another one who could help them.
