With the 2017 NBA Draft just a little over five weeks away, we take a look at possible draft targets for the Chicago Bulls. First up, we look at the point guards.

The 2017 NBA Draft is a little more than five weeks away. Much like the NFL Draft, we have some young men whose lives change as soon as they are called. Also, we have the fortunes of some teams change, for the better or for the worse, with their picks.

The Chicago Bulls are once again picking in the middle of the pack. They own the 16th overall pick. They may also get the Sacramento Kings’ first-round selection if it falls out of the top ten. If it does, then the Bulls pick up Sacramento’s second-round pick, the 38th overall pick.

We will take a look at a number of prospects at each position that the Bulls could go after. First up, we look at the point guards.

The point guard position was a sore spot for the Bulls. Last year, they signed Rajon Rondo and drafted Denzel Valentine. Additionally, they traded for Michael Carter-Williams and Cameron Payne. Well, Rajon Rondo had his ups and downs. He served a suspension for berating an assistant coach and fined for comments detrimental to the team. Valentine and Payne spent time at the D-League, and Carter-Williams got hurt as soon as he got to Chicago and was ineffective for most of the season.

In the playoffs, Rondo played excellently in the first two games against the Boston Celtics, but fractured his thumb and missed the rest of the series. In his absence, no other point guard could harass Boston’s Isaiah Thomas or score enough to help the Bulls win. They dropped the next four games after going up 2-0, and their summer vacation started.

In order for the Bulls to play well, they need an effective floor general, someone who can get everyone else involved and get the offense flowing properly. We see how teams succeed with good point guards like Russell Westbrook, Stephen Curry, Kyrie Irving, John Wall, and Thomas.

The importance of the point guard will be on display at the draft. Five of the top ten picks are expected to be point guards. This is a reason that I’ve advocated that the Bulls make that Jimmy Butler deal. If they get Boston’s lottery pick, and they also get Sacramento’s pick just outside the top ten, then they get two quality picks (one of them an important point guard) and they begin the process of getting back to contending.

Here is a list of five possible point guard prospects the Chicago Bulls should target:
