4. Alex Cobb, Tampa Bay Rays

Adding a long-term starting pitcher would be ideal for the Chicago Cubs. Jake Arrieta and John Lackey both become free agents this coming offseason, Brett Anderson has not been a strong addition and guys like Mike Mongtomery and Eddie Butler are still unproven. In a perfect world, the Cubs would be able to trade guys like Ian Happ and Jeimer Candelario for a long-term top of the rotation pitcher. However, that won’t be easy.

If the Cubs are stuck going with a rental approach, Alex Cobb would make a lot of sense. Cobb becomes a free agent after the 2017 season and the Tampa Bay Rays are not expected to be major competitors this season. Being a small market club, the Rays will likely be looking to sell Cobb to the highest bidder.

Cobb is a talented right-handed pitcher who missed most of 2016 because of injuries. However, in 2014 and 2015 Cobb had a 2.82 ERA in 49 starts. He has big-time upside on the mound and is a pitcher who Joe Maddon is extremely familiar with. Cobb has had a strong start for the Rays this season, posting a 3.86 ERA through six starts. Plus, as he gets back into his groove, Cobb should only get better.

If the asking price is right, I could see the Cubs making a move for Cobb prior to the MLB Trade Deadline.
