The Chicago Bears need to bring franchise quarterback Mitch Trubisky along slowly by not putting him on the field in 2017.

No matter how you feel about it, Mitch Trubisky is now the most important player for the Chicago Bears. General manager Ryan Pace and company have pinpointed Trubisky as the guy to lead this franchise into the future and everything they do from here on out needs to be done to put Trubisky in the best possible situation to succeed. The trade up and selection of Trubisky was a bold move that is either going to make or break this franchise.

Make no mistake about it, Trubisky is an incredibly talented player who has true franchise quarterback upside. In his one season as a starter at North Carolina, Trubisky showed elite pocket awareness, great mobility, a strong arm and accuracy to all field. He can create plays with his arm and legs, and can also throw an extremely accurate ball on the run.

Trubisky has a big arm. He puts great zip on the ball and can fire it into tight spaces when needed. He also shows the ability to put touch on his passes when necessary.

The Bears found themselves an extremely talented player at the most important position in the sport. It is easy to see why Pace and his staff fell in love with Trubisky as a football player.

That being said, he should not see the field for the Bears in 2017.

Trubisky is a talented guy who has a lot of natural upside, but he is not ready to compete at the NFL level. First, as I mentioned above, he only started one season in college. Trubisky obviously had the talent to start but never got the opportunity until last season. That lack of game experience obviously does not help his ability to immediately contribute at the next level.

More from Chicago Bears

Also, Trubisky played in a wide-open shotgun offense at North Carolina. He took a huge majority of his snaps from the shotgun position, meaning he cannot be comfortable taking consistent snaps under center.

That may not seem like a huge deal on the surface, but taking the snap and dropping back is not an easy thing to do. The timing is key here. If Trubisky’s timing is off even half of a second, it could result in a sack. The Bears’ new franchise quarterback undoubtedly has a ton of footwork to work on before he is ready for game action.

Trubisky is incredibly talented and probably has an NFL-ready skill set, but learning the game from the sidelines and working on his mechanics would be ideal. Plus, the Bears do not have to force him out there early in his career.

They signed Mike Glennon to a free agent contract this offseason to be their starting quarterback. After the selection of Trubisky, Glennon looks to be a one-year stop-gap option. However, they might as well still give him that year.

If Glennon comes out and plays well, the Bears now have a nice trade chip to work with next offseason. If he busts, they can simply cut bait and roll with Trubisky in 2018 and beyond. There is no downside to starting Glennon in 2017.

No matter how you feel about the trade up the Chicago Bears made to acquire him, Mitch Trubisky is a talented quarterback who has a chance to be a special player in the NFL. However, he still needs time to develop and the Bears are in a great position to give it to him. What’s the hurry? Giving Trubisky his rookie season to develop on the bench is the best way to go.
