The Chicago Blackhawks made another not so popular trade to begin the offseason sending backup goaltender Scott Darling to the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Chicago Blackhawks are at it again, trading away another fan favorite. Darling was dealt to the  Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for a third-round pick in the upcoming NHL draft. Darling grew up in a suburb of Chicago and many fans loved the hometown “kid”.

But was trading Darling the right thing to do? I have to say yes. Simply because it was more than likely that Chicago was going to lose Darling this summer anyways via the NHL expansion draft for the Vegas Knights.

The Blackhawks had to make a tough decision, do they wait it out and see if there’s a chance Vegas doesn’t take him or do they try to trade him and get something of value? Obviously, they chose to trade him away. It seemed to be the only logical decision, as starter Corey Crawford has a no-movement clause that would have to be waived in order for them to trade him.

I personally think Crawford is a top goalie in the NHL. However, he has moments that make me second guess myself. And the playoff series against Nashville is hard to put in the rear view mirror. I fully understand the move that was made and why it was made, so for that reason, I think Chicago did the right thing. They got a draft pick for a backup goaltender and we all know how well the Blackhawks are at turning draft picks into gold.

I may not like the fact that Darling is no longer a Hawk, but he gave the organization his all and proved that he deserved to be a starting goaltender in the NHL.

Darling will always be remembered for leading the Hawks out of the first round of the 2015 playoffs and I for one, believe they never win that championship without Scott Darling.

Good luck in Carolina, I hope I can vouch for most Blackhawks fans and say we wish you the best and hope to see you down the road!
