2017 NFL Draft: Draft Grades for Each First-Round Selection
The Los Angeles Chargers had an opportunity to add a real defensive playmaker with the seventh overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. A playmaking defensive back would have made a ton of sense here, but instead, the Chargers found themselves a target for Philip Rivers in the passing game.
At 6-foot-4, 218 pounds, Mike Williams is a big and physical receiver who is always open on the field. Seriously, this guy does not need to create much separation to make a play. He is a big and strong athlete who can go up and get the ball well. He also shows fantastic concentration when making the catch in traffic.
Williams is an intriguing prospect who will undoubtedly help the Chargers, but he lacks elite speed and athleticism for the position. Williams is a good, but not great athlete who gets by one his size far too often. He will have a tougher time against NFL cornerbacks who know how to combat his size advantage.
I am not saying this is a bad pick. Williams is a good player who can be a strong target in the passing game for the Chargers. However, I really think they would have been better off going with defense here. The strength of the 2017 NFL Draft is on the defensive side of the ball. The Chargers took an interesting player, but Williams is far from a guaranteed game breaker.
