2017 NFL Draft: Draft Grades for Each First-Round Selection
The Denver Broncos always seemed to be a fair bet to take an offensive tackle with the 20th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. Garrett Bolles does not have a long track record, but he was fantastic at Utah last season.
Bolles is an extremely quick and athletic offensive tackle who shows massive pass protection upside. On top of that, he is a mean and nasty run blocker who can dominate at the point of attack. At worst, Bolles can step in as a right tackle option for the Broncos. However, he has true left tackle upside at the next level as well.
The Detroit Lions selection of Jarrad Davis with the 21st overall pick is odd on the surface. Davis is a very good football player, but taking him over Rueben Foster seems silly. The Lions have a true need at the linebacker position and may have taken Foster off of their board after his attitude issues at the combine.
Davis is an athletic linebacker who can range from sideline-to-sideline. He is a fierce run defender who can also make plays on the blitz and in pass coverage. Davis is a good player who fits the Lions’ defense well. Taking Foster would have made more sense on paper, but there is nothing wrong with this selection as the Lions fill an obvious defensive need.
