2017 NFL Draft: Draft Grades for Each First-Round Selection
Jonathan Allen was one of the most dominant players in college football last season. He was an absolute beast against the run and showed the ability to rush the passer from the interior. It is hard to hate on the Washington Redskins taking him with the 17th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft.
Allen is a great football player, but his upside is relatively limited. He did not test well at the combine and has had major shoulder surgeries which are a concern. Allen slipped further than expected but he is still a great football player who can make an immediate impact in Washington. Good, solid pick for the Redskins here.
After taking a number one receiver earlier, the Tennessee Titans reach for defensive back help with the 18th overall pick. Adoree’ Jackson is a supremely talented player who can make an immediate impact on special teams. He is an elite returner who can take it to the house from anywhere on the field.
However, Jackson’s defensive skills are extremely raw. He is a talented cover corner, but Jackson’s technique is sloppy. Jackson also lacks great ball skills for the position. He could certainly grow into a star for the Titans, but I cannot help but think this pick was a bit of a reach.
Prior to the 2017 NFL Draft, O.J. Howard appeared to be a lock for the top ten. However, for reasons that cannot be explained, he fell a bit. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers simply sat back and took the best player on the board, landing Howard at number 19.
Howard is a complete tight end who is a major threat as a receiver. He is an athletic player who can stretch the field with his speed and make an impact in the red zone. Howard is a reliable hands catcher who will be another important weapon for Jamies Winston. On top of that, he is an extremely strong run blocker.
The Bucs did well here. Adding Howard to the mix makes an already explosive offense even better.
