The 2017 NFL Draft is upon us. With their first round pick, the Chicago Bears select Mitchell Trubisky. They shocked the NFL world by trading up to get him.

Well, the 2017 NFL Draft is underway. We wondered what the Chicago Bears would do with their pick. What they ended up doing was shocking the NFL world by trading up to the second spot and picking none other than Mitchell Trubisky.

The prevailing thought was that the Cleveland Browns were interested in Trubisky. In fact, some thought the Browns would trade with the Bears, giving up their 12th pick to move up to pick Trubisky.

Even though the Bears signed Mike Glennon to a big contract, many thought the Bears would still pick a quarterback. They just didn’t expect it to be Trubisky.

There isn’t a lot of tape on Trubisky since he started only 13 games. That tape, however, is excellent. He has the body to take the beating of the NFL, and has good movement in the pocket. His decision-making is good and quick; he won’t hold onto the ball for too much time. His arm strength is good, and he throws accurately from both the pocket and on the run.

The thing with Trubisky is that he played in the spread offense where over 90 percent of his snaps came from the shotgun. Also, he’ll need to improve his blitz reads to be successful.

This was an expensive pick for the Bears. They gave up their third and fourth round pick this year and next year’s fourth round pick. This could be a job-saving or job-killing deal for general manager Ryan Pace.

The advantage the Bears have is the signing of Glennon. Barring something incredible happening, he is the 2017 starter. The Bears can get out of the contract for $2.5 million in 2018, so if they feel Trubisky is ready, it won’t be expensive. Trubisky can sit in 2017, take a red-shirt season and learn what he needs to be a successful NFL quarterback.

Pace showed in his first two drafts that he isn’t shy about pulling the trigger on deals. He moved up last season to pick Leonard Floyd. That pick was panned by many as well. It sure was bold, to be sure. Let’s see if it was a smart one.
