The Chicago Bulls entered game four of their first-round series against the Boston Celtics needing a victory in order to regain momentum.

Final. 95. 24. 104. 18

After trailing by as much as 20 points in the first half of Game 4 against the Boston Celtics, the Chicago Bulls staged a comeback in the third quarter of the game.

The Bulls’ comeback in the third quarter was led by backup point guard Isaiah Canaan but it was Jimmy Butler who evened the score.

After coming back to tie the game at 63, the Bulls’ fell back into old habits and Celtics’ point guard Isaiah Thomas was able to regain the momentum for Boston.

At the end of the third quarter, the Celtics had a 79-70 lead. The end of the third quarter was an indicator of why the Bulls would struggle against the Celtics. When Thomas is not being guarded by Butler, the Bulls do not have an answer for the Celtics’ point guard. Thomas was able to take advantage of that fact during the closing moments of the fourth quarter.

Away from the court, cameras pictured Derrick Rose in attendance at the United Center.

The fourth quarter began and the Bulls still had no answer for Thomas. Thomas was controlling the game for the Celtics and Bulls simply could not contain him.

The biggest issue that the Bulls were plagued with on Sunday night was their inability to secure rebounds. With the Bulls unable to close out defensive stands, the Celtics were able to capitalize on second opportunities. On offense, the Bulls’ inability to secure rebounds prevented them from matching the second change opportunities that the Celtics had.

If the Bulls are going to win another game in this series, Fred Hoiberg will need to address the point guard situation. As long as Rajon Rondo is out with his finger injury, the Bulls’ point guard position will continue to be a liability in this series. Canaan showed on Sunday that he may be the best option for the Bulls minus Rondo.

The other issue is that the Bulls did not match the physicality of the Celtics. When Robin Lopez was not on the court for the Bulls, the team virtually had no chance at securing rebounds. That shouldn’t happen for a Bulls team that is much taller than the Celtics.

The Bulls will need to address those issues if they are going to regain the momentum from the Celtics in this series.

Game 5 between the Chicago Bulls and Boston Celtics will be on Wednesday in Boston.
