2017 NFL Draft Daily Chicago Bears Target: California Quarterback Davis Webb
The 2017 NFL Draft is one week away. Could California quarterback Davis Webb be a target of the Chicago Bears?
With the 2017 NFL Draft one week away, the Chicago Bears could be close to adding their long-term quarterback of the future.
The Chicago Bears currently have three quarterbacks on their roster. Mike Glennon is not the long-term answer at the quarterback position. Mark Sanchez is not the long-term answer at the quarterback position. And, Connor Shaw is not the long-term answer at the quarterback position.
There is no question that Bears’ general manager Ryan Pace will be looking to add the team’s long-term quarterback in the 2017 NFL Draft next week. Recent rumors have suggested that the Bears could target either Clemson’s quarterback DeShaun Watson or North Carolina’s quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. However, if the Bears opt to address their defensive needs with their first round selection, Pace will almost certainly draft a quarterback in either the second round or third round.

If that is the case, the Bears could take a look at California quarterback Davis Webb.
Webb, who spent his first three collegiate seasons at Texas Tech before transferring to California last season, had a career college completion percentage of 61.5 with 83 touchdowns against 34 interceptions.
In terms of rankings, Webb may be the fifth quarterback behind Watson, Trubisky, Kizer, and Mahomes.
Initially, Webb was projected to be selected between the second and third rounds of the 2017 NFL Draft. However, after the scouting combine and some private workouts, there is beginning to be talk that Webb could slip into the first round of the draft.
Here is why that would be a mistake. Webb is the second coming of Alex Smith. Smith is a very good quarterback but he is not the quarterback that a team can peg as their franchise quarterback. Webb struggles with throws downfield and his decision making is suspect at best. Not to mention, Webb’s stature in the pocket has drawn comparisons to Brock Osweiler.

Webb is not a tremendous fit for the Bears. Had there Bears’ offensive coaching staff prove that they are capable of developing talent, then perhaps Webb could be an option. But considering the lack of confidence in the Bears’ offensive staff, the team would be best suited targeting one of the top four quarterbacks in the 2017 NFL Draft.
