Chicago Cubs Come Back to Defeat Brewers 9-7: Recap, Highlights and More

The Chicago Cubs were able to complete an impressive comeback, taking down the Milwaukee Brewers 9-7 on Tuesday night.

Now that reminded me of the 2016 Chicago Cubs. The defending World Series champions lived up to their “We Never Quit” mantra on Tuesday night, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers by a score of 9-7.

It was an ugly start to the game for the Cubs. Brett Anderson had far and away the worst start of his season, giving up three runs right away in the first inning. Anderson pitched a perfect second inning but gave up two more runs in the third. Heading into the bottom of the third inning, the Brewers led this game 5-0.

Luckily, Kyle Schwarber was able to keep it close, hitting a two-run home run in the third. The 5-2 score made a comeback seem manageable, but Anderson quickly gave up a home run to Orlando Arcia to lead-off the fourth inning. It just did not seem to be the Cubs’ night.

A Miguel Montero two-run shot in the fourth got the Cubs back on track, making the score 6-4. However, it was their explosion in the bottom of the sixth that really got things going.

With one-our, Montero singled and was quickly on third base after a Javy Baez double. Albert Almora pinch hit and immediately hit a two-run single to make the 7-6. Jon Jay followed that up with a big RBI triple to tie the game. Jay scored on a wild pitch by Jared Hughes with Kris Bryant at the plate to give the Cubs an 8-7 lead.

The Cubs bullpen took over from there. Carl Edwards Jr., Hector Rondon and Wade Davis each pitched scoreless innings to hold the lead for the Cubs. A Rondon walk in the eight was the only base runner allowed by the trio.

Justin Grimm took home the win in this one after his perfect sixth inning. Hughes took the loss for the Brewers, while Wade Davis picked up his third save of the season for the Cubs.

Three Stars

1. Miguel Montero: 3-4, 1 HR and 2 RBI

Montero has not been seeing a ton of playing time but he was the big hero on Tuesday night. Without his bat in the lineup, the Cubs probably do not win this game.

2. Cubs’ Bullpen: 5.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB and 7 K

The offense obviously deserves a ton of credit for the comeback but the Cubs’ bullpen really kept this one manageable. Brian Duensing gave up a run in his 1.1 innings of work, but Grimm, Edwards, Rondon and Davis were all lights out.

3. Travis Shaw: 3-4, 1 HR and 3 RBI

The Brewers’ middle of the order is incredibly scary right now. Eric Thames, Ryan Braun and Travis Shaw are all on fire, with Shaw being the one doing to most damage on Tuesday night.

The Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers will play the rubber match in their three-game set on Wednesday afternoon at Wrigley Field. First pitch is at 1:20 pm CT. Kyle Hendricks will take the mound for the Cubs and he will be opposed by Tommy Milone.
