Chicago Bears Miss the Mark in Two-Round 2017 NFL Mock Draft
The Chicago Bears do not have a strong showing in this recent 2017 NFL Mock Draft.
It is important for the Chicago Bears to hit it big in the 2017 NFL Draft. Ryan Pace and company have made moves that clearly state they will continue to build this roster through the draft. Pace put together a strong draft class last year, with Leonard Floyd, Cody Whitehair and Jordan Howard leading the way.
That being said, if the Chicago Bears expect to take the next step, they need to add more young, impact talent around last year’s rookies. Starting with the third overall selection, the Bears are in a great position to add a ton of impact talent in the 2017 NFL Draft.
With so many mock drafts in circulation these days, you are bound to come across a few that you do not agree with. That is the exact case that happened in Dane Brugler’s two-round NFL mock draft for CBS Sports that released on Tuesday.
Brugler is a fantastic NFL Draft analyst. Easily one of the best in the business. His mock draft as a whole was great, but I do not love the picks Brugler predicted for the Chicago Bears.
With the third overall pick in Brugler’s mock, the Bears took North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky. Here is what he had to say about the selection:
"Yes, Mike Glennon is the (well-paid) No. 1, but adding Trubisky gives Chicago a young, talented passer to groom and take over as the starter, making Glennon a (well-paid) bridge quarterback."
I would not hate the Bears taking Trubisky at number three, but he is far from my favorite choice. Deshaun Watson is my favorite quarterback in this class and should be the Bears’ selection at number three. I would even rather see someone like LSU safety Jamal Adams, Stanford EDGE Solomon Thomas (he was not available in this mock) or Ohio State safety Malik Hooker over Trubisky at three.

I love the idea of the Bears investing in a quarterback, so I cannot hate on this pick too hard. But Trubisky is the wrong choice. Trubisky is a good quarterback with a bright NFL future, but nothing he does on the field screams future star quarterback. He is an accurate passer who makes good decisions and has a good arm, but Trubisky’s upside at the next level is limited.
If the Bears believe that Trubisky can be their franchise quarterback, I do not have a major problem with the selection. Personally, I would just rather see Watson or an elite defensive playmaker. They would be much safer picks with more natural upside.
I can stomach the idea of Trubisky, but Brugler’s second-round selection of Josh Jones for the Bears would be a major mistake. Jones is a good coverage safety who dominated the combine and would fill a positional need. However, Jones struggles staying in position on the field.
He is an aggressive player who commonly overplays the ball. Jones has some nice upside but he makes a lot of mistakes in coverage. With the talent remaining on the board in the early second round, Jones is not a good selection at number 36.
Just at a quick glance, I would rather see the Bears take fellow defensive backs Quincy Wilson, Budda Baker, Chidobe Awuzie, Adoree’ Jackson or Fabian Moreau at number 36. Pass rushers Takkarist McKinley and Charles Harris would also make much more sense. All of these players were still available for the Bears at number 36 in this mock, and the Bears took Jones. That would be a major mistake.

With such great draft capital, the Chicago Bears probably cannot mess this draft up too much. That being said, they would be well on their way starting it off with Trubisky and Jones in the first two round. I can get behind Trubisky a bit, but he is far from my first choice. Jones in the second round makes no sense to me.
