2017 NFL Draft: Chicago Bears seven-round mock draft
Danny Trevathan suffered a major knee injury. The Bears are confident he’ll be able to return, but they felt the same both times Kevin White injured his legs and when Kyle Fuller went in for a minor knee scope that cost him the entire season.
The Bears could do well with having some linebacker depth, especially at inside linebacker. Boulware played on the inside and was a team captain for the National Champion Clemson Tigers.
Boulware brings instant energy, leadership and a physical game. Given his high motor and football instincts, he makes some big plays. He recorded 14 passes defended, 6 fumbles forced and 7 sacks in his career.
That football instincts is what gives Boulware a shot at the higher level. He can pick up a play early on and make the play to stop it. Being only 6-foot-0, his height is a disadvantage. His technique is flawless as well. He cannot afford to make mistakes, and once he gets onto a ball carrier, usually that guy goes down. Also, while he isn’t fast, he has a quick first step that helps him get past blockers.
Boulware hears all the whispers about his size. He’s faced it throughout his time at every level. He can look at Zach Thomas, however, and use him as inspiration. Thomas was just 5-foot-11, yet he was a five-time All Pro and a seven-time Pro Bowler. Boulware has the same limitation, and he can also bust them much the same way Thomas busted his.
