The Chicago White Sox are almost at the end of their first road trip of the season, going 4-2 against the Cleveland Indians and Minnesota Twins.

The Chicago White Sox are playing some solid baseball right now with a record of 6-5. Most of us figured it would be a little darker on the south side to start the year. The strong point to start the season surprisingly has been their starting pitching. Aside from Jose Quintana‘s struggles, the starting pitching as been great.

Derek Holland is 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA in 12 innings pitched. Holland has looked lights out to start the season and although it’s only been two starts, it’s still nice to see. Perhaps the biggest surprise for me so far is James Sheilds. I will be the first to criticize Sheilds but he has proved me wrong in his first three starts of the season.

Sheilds is 1-0 with a 1.62 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 16 2/3 innings pitched. Sheilds is a proven winner at the big league level and his struggles last season really upset him. So far, it’s looking like his down season was the exact motivation that he needed.

More from Chicago White Sox

The White Sox started their road trip in Cleveland and would take two of three from the defending American League champs. They then traveled to Minnesota to play the red hot Twins and would also take two of three from them.

One of the main story lines from the series in Minnesota would be the call up of center fielder Willy Garcia. Garcia started two of the three games and would collect his first career major hit in his first at-bat.

Another bright spot has been right fielder Avisail Garcia. Garcia has never lived up to the hype that followed him from Detroit, but this season we are seeing a completely different player. He is currently leading the league with a .456 average and went 4-5 with the game winning two run homer in the 10th inning of Sunday’s game against the Twins. Garcia is on fire right now and I look for him to keep up the hitting all season long.
