When trading up for quarterback Deshaun Watson earlier, the Chicago Bears landed a compensatory fifth-round selection as a throw in. With that compensatory pick, the Bears find Watson’s possible long-term backup quarterback.

Joshua Dobbs is an extremely smart quarterback who has all of the physical tools to stick at the next level. Dobbs can read a defense extremely well and showed his ability to rapidly improve with proper NFL coaching at the Senior Bowl. He is a perfect developmental prospect who would make a ton of sense for the Bears this late.

His accuracy and footwork are a concern, but Dobbs has a strong arm and is athletic for the position. If he can work hard and improve his accuracy, Dobbs has a chance to become an impact player at the next level. With so many picks, he is worth a shot for the Chicago Bears at this point.

The Bears’ final selection comes deep in the seventh round, only 10 picks from the end of the draft. With their extremely late selection, the Bears take a shot on some upside.

D.J. Jones is a big and athletic defensive lineman who can create some pressure from the interior. His work ethic has been questioned throughout his career, but his upside at the position is obvious. If Jones can stay motivated, he has a chance to be a strong player at the next level.

This late in the draft, the Bears take a shot on a player who could have a legitimate future. Give him a chance in Training Camp and see how it goes. If Jones does not show signs of wanting to work hard, it would be easy just to cut your losses and move on.
