Chicago White Sox: Outfielder Willy Garcia To Make First Big League Start
The Chicago White Sox promoted Willy Garcia on Friday with Melky Cabrera going on paternal leave after the birth of his child. Garcia will make his first start with the White Sox on Friday.
The Chicago White Sox have called up center fielder Willy Garcia for his major league debut. Garcia has been a career minor leaguer spending eight seasons in the minors and batting .259 for his career.
This season has been a different story for the center fielder, as he has found his swing at the plate. Currently batting .423 with two home runs and six RBI in seven games with Charlotte. Garcia has impressed the White Sox not only during the first seven games in Triple-A but during spring training as well.
Melky Cabrera will most likely be back in the lineup come Monday so Garcia’s stint in the majors is looking like a short one. However, this is a big step for Garcia. Now is the time to show the White Sox what he can do and potentially earn himself a roster spot. The 24-year-old still has a lot to prove to be an everyday starter in the majors but given his early success this season, it may be safe to say he is well on his way.
The White Sox are struggling to find the right fit in center field so far this season. Jacob May was expected to run away with the position but hasn’t recorded his first hit yet. His struggles at the plate have seen a platoon of him and Leury Garcia. Although Willy will be playing left field for the Sox he is a natural center fielder and if he plays well who knows what could happen.
The Chicago White Sox will be starting an all Garcia outfield against Minnesota tonight with Avisail Garcia in right, Leury Garcia in center and Willy Garcia in left.
