The Chicago Bears have reportedly signed cornerback B.W. Webb to a free agent contract.

The secondary was an issue for the Chicago Bears last season. They have put together a strong defensive front seven but their play in the secondary lagged far behind. The Bears have put resources in both the safety position (Quintin Demps) and cornerback (Marcus Cooper and Prince Amukamara) this offseason, but they apparently are not done.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the Bears have agreed to a deal with free agent cornerback B.W. Webb. Webb is a four-year veteran who spent last season with the New Orleans Saints.

If we are being honest, this is nothing more than an upside grab for the Chicago Bears. Webb has been an extremely inconsistent player throughout his NFL career, flashing talent but never being a truly reliable option.

He was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round (114th overall) of the 2013 NFL Draft. Webb only spent one season in Dallas, playing the 2014 season with the Pittsburgh Steelers, 2015 with the Tennessee Titans and in New Orleans last season. Webb has some talent, but him playing for his fifth franchise for his fifth NFL season is probably not a great sign.

Webb shows fantastic natural ability at the cornerback position. He is an extremely quick and athletic corner who had dominate from the slot at times. His numbers from the combine paint an impressive picture of an extremely gifted athlete.

At the 2013 combine, Webb ran a 4.51 40-yard dash, had a 40.5-inch vertical leap, an 11-foot broad jump and a 3.84-second three-cone drill. Webb showed elite quickness and athleticism at the combine and it still shows on the football field, at least in small doses.

Webb is unlikely to be a major contributor for the Chicago Bears, but he certainly has some upside at an important position of need. For a contract that likely did not cost them much, I like seeing the Bears taking a shot on a player like Webb. When it comes down to it, what could it hurt?
