Longevity is the reason Bill Nicholson is on this list. He played for the Cubs for 10 seasons, consistently putting up strong power numbers as an everyday player. Nicholson did not exactly play in an offensive era for Major League Baseball, but he undoubtedly had a lot of power in his left-handed swing.

Nicholson was best known for taking a big hack at the plate. He would not allow himself to get cheated. There was a lot of swing and miss to his game, but when Nicholson would connect, the ball would fly out of the ballpark in a hurry.

Nicholson took over as an everyday player for the Cubs in 1940. He hit .297/.366/.534 with 25 home runs that season. Nicholson followed that up with 26, 21, 29 and 33 home runs in the following four seasons. Strong power numbers for a guy of his era.

Nicholson’s best years came in 1943 and 1944. He led the National League in home runs (29 and 33) and RBIs (128 and 122) in each of those seasons. Nicholson also showed a strong eye at the plate, finishing his Cubs career in 1948 with an impressive 368 on-base percentage.

He is not a well-known former Cub but Nicholson was clearly an offensive force in his day.
