Andre Dawson exploded onto the scene in the 1970s, playing 11 seasons with the Montreal Expos. Dawson was incredible with the Expos but was arguably just as good in his six years with the Chicago Cubs.

Dawson signed a free agent contract with the Cubs in Spring Training of 1987 and immediately became the team’s best player. In his first season with the Cubs, Dawson hit an incredible .289/.328/.568 with a league-leading 49 home runs and 137 RBI.

Dawson was so incredible that season that he was named National League MVP despite the Cubs coming in last place in the NL East. It was the first time that any player had won a league MVP award for a last place team.

The legendary outfielder was never quite that explosive for the Cubs again, but Dawson continued to be an offensive force for the Cubs over his last five years with the team. He hit .303/.344/.504 with 24 home runs the next season and never hit fewer than 21 home runs was a member of the Cubs.

Dawson was an extremely exciting offensive player who electrified Wrigley Field. He was never able to lead the Chicago Cubs to a ton of success, but he is far from the only talented player who has failed to do so.
