Now we are starting to get to some real Chicago Cubs legends. What could be said about Ryne Sandberg that has not been said before? He is one of the greatest players in the history of the franchise. Sandberg is arguably the best offensive second baseman in MLB history and was an easy selection to the MLB Hall of Fame in 2005.

Sandberg was an incredible overall player. He hit for average, showed great plate discipline and of course, had a ton of natural power. Sandberg was a 10-time All-Star for the Cubs and won the Silver Slugger award at second base seven times.

On top of his obvious offensive ability, Sandberg was an elite defender at second base. He won nine total Gold Gloves in his career, winning the award for second base in consecutive seasons from 1983-1991.

Sandberg’s best season with the Chicago Cubs came in 1984 when he hit .314/..367/.520 with 19 home runs and 84 RBI. Sandberg had 200 total hits that season and scored 114 runs. For good measure, Sandberg stole 32 bases on 39 attempts. Sandberg won the National League MVP award in 1984 for his incredible play.

Power was only a portion of Sandberg’s incredibly well-rounded game but he ended his career as one of the best power hitters in the long and storied history of the Chicago Cubs.
