The Chicago White Sox have decided to start their young talented prospect Michael Kopech in Double-A.

Chicago White Sox pitching prospect Michael Kopech was projected to start the season in Single-A this year and potentially move up to Double-A at some point this season. Well, plans have changed and it looks the hard-throwing righty will get to start the season with the Double-A Birmingham Barons.

A very subtle tweet from Kopech on Saturday morning on his promotion to the Birmingham Barons.

Kopech impressed fans and White Sox management during spring training with some stellar starts and a superb outing against the Chicago Cubs that caught everyone’s attention. Kopech is best known for his fastball and consistently hits over 100 MPH on the mound.

What does starting the season in double a mean for Kopech and the White Sox?

More from Chicago White Sox

As of right now, Kopech still has a long road ahead of him before he makes it to the big leagues. However, this is a huge step in the right direction.

This move could also be a major confidence builder for the 20-year-old who hasn’t started a game above Single-A yet in his young career.

Having the support of the White Sox and the confidence from front office and coaches should help Kopech deal with the butterflies of pitching at a higher level.

Kopech is well on his way to becoming a major league star and this is a huge step for him in his career and for the White Sox during this rebuild. This promotion for Kopech doesn’t mean he will be in the majors any sooner. All it means is that the coaches and scouts believe he has the skill to start the season at a higher level.

There still is a lot of work to be done before Kopech even gets a chance at Triple-A, let alone the major league level.

Kopech still needs to go out and impress before we can even discuss a time frame for his major league debut. But if he pitches well in Double-A, maybe a call-up to the next level would be warranted this season.
