With Opening Day a week away, many of the questions for the 2017 Chicago White Sox have been answered.  Jose Abreu will be the first basemen again this season and his potential role going forward will be crucial.

Jose Abreu will once again be an everyday player for the Chicago White Sox in 2017. Abreu won rookie of the year honors in 2014 but since has seen a decline in his numbers.

With 25 home runs, .468 slugging and .820 OPS last season, Abreu is seeking improvement in 2017. The roster moves made by the front office will undoubtedly take pressure off the players. So, on the field, expect Abreu to bounce back  as the weather warms up this summer.

Off the field, Abreu’s impact can do wonders for the White Sox future. Over the years, the White Sox have had many Cuban players with Abreu arguably being the most successful. As the White Sox bring along Yoan Moncada and other prospects, it is certain that player development is the most important thing this season.

More from Da Windy City

It goes without saying that going from a Cuban team to the bright lights of Chicago or Boston, in Moncada’s case, has to be overwhelming. A lot of young players all over baseball are experiencing a culture shock. Between a new country, a new city and millions dollars on the table, it can be difficult for players to make the transition.

With Abreu being from Cuba, a relationship with Moncada could be a good thing. Having that familiar cultural can help the transition for the Sox be as smooth as possible. Abreu is silently an ambassador of character and a hard worker so as young players start to grow, having him around will do some good.

All of the veterans on the White Sox will be called on to teach and lead by example over the next few years. Jose Abreu in particular could take the White Sox best prospect under his wing, and help him to be a star.
