The Chicago Bears are reportedly about to sign quarterback Mark Sanchez.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the Chicago Bears are about to bring quarterback Mark Sanchez into the mix. Jeez, are we sure that we actually wanted Jay Cutler gone?

Mike Glennon was signed to be the Bears’ starting quarterback earlier in free agency. Glennon has some perceived upside but is far from a proven commodity. When it comes to Mark Sanchez, we know what he can do and it is not pretty.

Sanchez was the fifth overall selection by the New York Jets back in the 2009 NFL Draft. Sanchez did lead the Jets to back-to-back postseason appearances to start his career but quickly became a bust after some early success.

The former top draft pick has bounced around the league a bit the past few years featuring stops with the Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos and Dallas Cowboys.

Sanchez has always struggled with turnovers and is no longer even a quality backup quarterback. So, why are the Bears signing him?

Honestly, I think this has a lot to do with helping the younger quarterbacks on the roster. Sanchez received rave reviews for his work with Dak Prescott of the Dallas Cowboys last season. Prescott took the league by storm as a fourth-round rookie quarterback and Sanchez was given credit for being a coach on the sidelines of sorts for Prescott.

If any of that is true, Sanchez will be great to have around for Glennon. The Bears starting quarterback does not exactly have a ton of in-game experience and will benefit from having an experienced voice on the sidelines.

Perhaps more importantly, would be the influence of Sanchez of the upcoming Bears rookie quarterback. Even with Glennon in the fold, I would be shocked if the Bears do not add a quarterback at some point in the 217 NFL Draft.

The signing of Sanchez is unlikely to make any on-field difference for the Chicago Bears, but he could easily be a strong influence to the quarterback position off the field.
