Chicago Bears Daily 2017 NFL Prospect: North Carolina QB Mitchell Trubisky
Continuing to take a look at Chicago Bears 2017 NFL Draft targets for the Chicago Bears. Up next is North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.
At the start of the free agency period, the Chicago Bears addressed their need at the quarterback position.
When NFL Free Agency opened on Thursday afternoon, the Bears agreed to a three-year contract with free agent quarterback Mike Glennon. Glennon will enter the 2017 season as the Bears’ starting quarterback but the team needs to still address the quarterback position in the 2017 NFL Draft.
While Glennon signed a three-year deal with the Bears, the quarterback is only guaranteed $19 million. With Glennon receiving a bulk of that money during his first season, the Bears may have shown their hand. The Bears will publicly endorse Glennon but the contract languages suggests that the team knows he is not the long-term answer at the quarterback position.

The Bears are going to need to find their long-term answer at the quarterback position through the 2017 NFL Draft. Even after the signing of Glennon, the chances remain strong that the Bears will select a quarterback early in the 2017 NFL Draft. If that is the case, then the Bears will take a hard look at North Carolina quarterback Mitchell Trubisky.
Trubisky, who declared for the 2017 NFL Draft after his junior season, thrived in his only season as the starting quarterback for the North Carolina football program. Trubisky passed for 3,748 yards and 30 touchdowns against only 6 interceptions.
The biggest knock on Trubisky is his lack of experience. The suggestion is that NFL teams will be cautious to take Trubisky in the first round considering he only has one season as a starting quarterback under his belt.
Having said that, everything about Trubisky’s game would suggest that he is capable of being a very good NFL starting quarterback. Trubisky has a strong arm and demonstrated excellent accuracy with a completion percentage of 68 percent last season with North Carolina.

Listening to Trubisky speak at the NFL Scouting Combine last week, I got the impression that he is a quarterback that Bears’ head coach John Fox would love. If Fox has any say in the Bears’ draft approach, it’s possible he could throw his vote behind Trubisky. The Bears would be an ideal option for Trubisky as he can develop behind Glennon for a season or two and then take the reigns of the offense.
Mike Glennon may be in the fold but that should not prevent the Chicago Bears from taking Mitchell Trubisky with the third overall selection in the 2017 NFL Draft.
