The Chicago Bears have signed free agent safety Quintin Demps to a three-year deal.

The secondary is a massive need for the Chicago Bears. They lack impact talent at both the cornerback and safety position. Aside from finding a franchise quarterback, adding talent to the secondary was likely Ryan Pace’s number one priority this off season.

The Bears missed out on top cornerbacks Stephon Gilmore and A.J. Bouye despite showing heavy interest in both players. They do however make a nice under-the-radar move on the first day of free agency, landing safety Quintin Demps from the Houston Texans. The move was first reported by Aaron Wilson of the Houston Chronicle. Adam Caplan of ESPN was the first to report the details of the deal.

The 32-year-old Demps may not be a significant long-term answer, but he is undoubtedly a big-time immediate upgrade at the safety position. Plugging Demps next to Adrian Amos gives the Bears a decent starting duo at safety. Still average at best, but much better than what they were rolling out there last season.

Demps has really come into his own the past two years with the Texans. He has always been an impact in-the-box safety who can defend tight ends and play well against the run. However, Demps has really taken his coverage skills to the next level recently.

Demps is a solid deep coverage safety who can cover a lot of ground. He also shows strong ball skills, coming away with six interceptions for the Texans last season. As a team, the Chicago Bears only had eight interceptions last season.

Signing Demps was not the big day one move that most fans expected. However, adding him to the mix is undoubtedly a step in the right direction. The Bears have huge holes all across the secondary. They had to start somewhere, and signing Demps was a solid start.
