Recent Chicago Bears rumors have the team pushing hard to sign free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore.

The Chicago Bears have obvious needs all across their secondary. They have strong defensive front seven, but their lack of talent at both cornerback and safety was painfully obvious last season. Well, the Bears appear to be aggressively attacking their needs.

According to Alex Marvez of Sporting News, the Chicago Bears are “Making (a) Big Push to Sign” free agent cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Gilmore is the top cornerback on the open market and is expected to get a huge payday.

Gilmore is a fantastic cover corner who shows ridiculous natural coverage ability. He is a true lock down number one guy who would immediately make a huge difference in the Bears’ secondary. Signing Gilmore would give the Bears a much-needed number one cornerback, taking pressure off of Tracy Porter. Porter would be a solid second cornerback, giving the Bears a strong duo at the position.

I do not know if paying Gilmore huge money is the right move for the Chicago Bears to make. The upcoming 2017 draft class is absolutely loaded with talent. Personally, I would probably rather they look to address the position in the draft. That being said, it is hard to argue with signing a guy like Gilmore. He is undoubtedly a star player at a huge position of need.

Gilmore would not solve the Bears’ defensive issues, but he would certainly go a long way towards helping. Getting him in the mix would immediately make the Bears’ defense legit. Think of how valuable a number one corner like Gilmore would be against Aaron Rodgers and Matthew Stafford.

The Bears have a talented young roster that just needs cleaning up in the right places. Adding Gilmore would immediately clean up their cornerback position, which is one their biggest needs. He won’t be cheap, but Stephon Gilmore would be a huge difference-maker for the Chicago Bears.

UPDATE

Jason La Canfora checks in, calling the Bears front runners for Gilmore. However, as I mentioned, it is not going to be cheap.
