Chicago Cubs infielder Javier Baez is an incredible defensive player. No matter where Joe Maddon puts him on the field, Baez steps up and always gives an elite defensive effort. If he ever ends up sticking at a full-time defensive position, Baez is going to dominate the Gold Glove voting.

It is still extremely early in Spring Training, but Baez is already showing off his defensive skill-set. On Sunday against the Cleveland Indians, Baez made an impressive play up the middle from second base. Here, just see for yourself:

Yeah, he’s good. Baez is an absolute wizard with the glove and this is just the first of many highlight reel plays we will undoubtedly see from him this season. Baez is so slick with the glove, has incredible range and a rocket arm. That is a fantastic combination of skills for an infielder.

It will be interesting to see how Maddon gets Baez into the lineup this season. Despite being arguably their best player in the post season run last year, Baez does not have an obvious spot in the everyday lineup.

His elite versatility will obviously help Baez get into the lineup, but it is not going to easy. Luckily, Maddon is the best in the game at getting everyone involved. If Baez continues to play at a high-level, he will undoubtedly be heavily in the mix.

If everyone can stay healthy, Baez’ versatility will help get everyone rest. He can fill in at all positions on the infield, playing elite-level defense and bringing massive offensive upside. Plus, when he fills in at third or second, Kris Bryant and Ben Zobrist can move to the corner outfield and give guys like Kyle Schwarber and Jason Heyward a day off.

There are unlimited possibilities with this Chicago Cubs roster; Javier Baez and his incredible defense has a lot to do with it.
