Chicago Bears 2017 mock draft: Full seven rounds
Josh Harvey-Clemons, S, Louisville (6-foot-5, 230 pounds)
Harvey-Clemons’ mistakes could turn out to be the Chicago Bears’ advantage. The Louisville safety flunked two drug tests because of marijuana and got himself kicked off the Georgia Bulldogs’ team.
Afterward, Harvey-Clemons transferred to Louisville and worked to regain his reputation. Todd Grantham, the defensive coordinator of Louisville, had the same position at Georgia, and he took a chance on him. Harvey-Clemons rewarded him by playing well and avoiding any trouble. He recorded 149 tackles (6 for loss), 6 passes defended, 3 interceptions, and 2 sacks.
Harvey-Clemons played multiple positions at Louisville, including safety, linebacker, and slot cornerback. Bears defensive coordinator Vic Fangio would love a player like that.
Harvey-Clemons is very tall, but considering that height, he plays well-balanced. He uses good tackling technique, squaring the ball carrier up and wrapping well to bring him down. He plays aggressively, and won’t back down from physical play.
Harvey-Clemons is quick to diagnose a play, and his vision is excellent. He can look into the quarterback’s eyes then back to his assignment without trouble. He needs to build up his strength at the next level, however. Of course, that is something you can say about most college players.
Harvey-Clemons needs to knock it out of the park during the interview sessions at the NFL Combine. There are some teams intrigued by his talent, but scared of his off-field troubles. He will need to respond to many questions about his troubles. He can impress teams if he handles the scrutiny well, but a lot of teams will stay away from him no matter what. If he can convince the Chicago Bears he’s over his problems, they can have one of the biggest steals of the draft.
