The Chicago Bears are seemingly on a never-ending search for quality safeties. That holds true for this year. There are some good ones in the draft who may help them.

It seems that the Chicago Bears are always looking for safeties. They had good ones in their heyday with Gary Fencik and Dave Duerson, but in the past decade or so their luck is lacking. We still have nightmares of Major Wright and Chris Conte.

They have Harold Jones-Quartey and Adrian Amos, but beyond that there is not much. Deon Bush may develop into a good pro, but we shall see.

The safeties are the last line of defense deep downfield. They prevent the big plays. A cornerback can get beat, but the safety can be there to keep the problem to a minimum. If a ball carrier gets past a safety, then that equals big trouble.

Safeties also come in and bring support against the run. Yes, having a corner who could hit is nice, but not many of them do it well. A safety can come in and lower the boom.

As with the cornerback unit, I believe the Bears will go after someone through free agency. They won’t break the bank, however.

That’s where the draft comes in.

There are some talented and versatile safeties who can help the defense. Versatility is the name of the game today, and being able to move pieces around helps a great deal. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is a master at moving players around, so the more pieces he has, the stronger the defense becomes.

Here is a list of some possible safeties in the 2017 NFL Draft who could help the Chicago Bears:
