Chicago Bears 2017 draft position profiles: Cornerbacks
The cornerback unit is a big need for the Chicago Bears. Here is a look at some of the top talent in the 2017 NFL Draft who can provide help.
The Chicago Bears secondary needs a lot of help. The cornerbacks suffered through a number of injuries. There were undrafted rookie free agents who started games. When that happens, either the player is a budding star or there just wasn’t enough bodies available. For the Bears, it was the latter and not the former.
To add to the misery, the Bears top pick from a couple of years ago, Kyle Fuller, suffered what the team thought to be a relatively minor injury that extended through the season. The coaching staff questioned his willingness to come back and play, even in the face of teammates busting their butts to get back on the field.
The Bears got a good look at some of the young players they currently have. They have a good idea on who they keep and who they let go. When they have their final decisions, they need to go out and find some good replacements.
This year’s draft is pretty deep in the cornerback position. There are a number of players who should have good NFL careers.
NFL Draft expert Daniel Jeremiah spoke on how deep the cornerback position is this year. “The more tape I study, the more I’m amazed at the volume of quality cornerbacks in this class,” he said. “I mentioned this to an NFC personnel executive this week and he agreed. In fact, he thought there were 15 cornerbacks worthy of going in the top 40 picks. Fifteen! Now, we won’t see that many go off the board that early, but it speaks to the quality of the class and the value that should be there in the late second and even early third-round. If you need some help in pass coverage, this is your draft.”
Even if the Bears go the free agent route, I believe they will still find someone in the draft.
